It’s raining today, which gave me the opportunity to take some of the coolest photos I think I’ve ever taken.
The way the raindrops bead on the backs of the petals, which are so translucent you can make out each drop clearly from the other side; the contrast of the coral corona against the rich greens; the way the light silvers the droplets – I’m in love 😍
This ‘Perfect Lady’ narcissus greeted me on the way out the door this morning. It’s lovely to see the bulbs I planted last fall starting to bloom after a dreary spring.

Bulbs + containers
I have a beautiful ceramic pot that sits on my front step year-round. It’s the perfect size for the plain plastic grower’s pots my favourite garden centre sells, so I have a rotating pair of pots I swap out. Last summer’s skeletons got replaced this weekend with a fresh pot of crocus, iris, and narcissus. I planted the bulbs last October, and they overwintered on my back deck, protected by an upside-down tomato cage wrapped in frost blanket.
I’ve also filled my big rectangular self-watering planter with tulips, anemones, and gladiolus. I used a couple of plexiglass sheets and some pot toes to make a simple cold frame to keep the soil temperature up a little through the winter. It looks like the tulips are on their way up at least!
Narcissus ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’
Looking good in the morning sun.

My Erlicheer paperwhites have started to bloom! These narcissus are a good variety for forcing even if a northwest-facing windowsill is the best you can do in the winter. I ‘planted’ these bulbs in small mason jars filled with pumice, and all they need is the occasional watering!
